WhatsOnStage TheatreGoers Awards Launch Party (2008)

December 5, 2008:

WhatsOnStage hosted a lavish launch party at the London Hippodrome to announce the nomineees for their 2009 TheatreGoers Choice Awards. This award show is unique in that all the nominees and winners are decided on by the public rather than critics. The Donmar Warehouse led the way with 18 total nominations. Two of the productions Tom Hiddleston was involved with, Othello and Ivanov, scored five and six nominations respectively. Tom was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Play for his joint work in Othello and Ivanov.

Tom with his fellow Best Supporting Actor in a Play nominees Kevin R McNally and Malcolm Sinclair. Kevin was also in Ivanov.

You can watch a feature on the launch below. In the video many actors comment on future of theatre in the face of the financial crisis, Tom comments "there's been a huge amount of varied life the the West End, I think theatre is fitter than it's ever been". (2:58) Tom is also asked about his experience at the launch party and replies "it's great fun, I didn't expect it to be so kind of full on." (4:32)

*Spoiler Alert: Tom won!

Fashion:

Tom Hiddleston was wearing a Burberry trench coat. Most of you will probably recognize the scarf because he also wore it in the 2010 film Archipelago. Tom is notorious for keeping items from set and also for wearing his own clothes on film. The budget for Archipelago was so small that cast members wore their own clothes or clothes from charity shops to save money.
