Othello Press Night (2007)

December 4, 2007:

The cast of Donmar Warehouse's Othello celebrated their Press Night with an after party at One Aldwych in London. More than a decade later this still holds up as one of the greatest theatre casts ever assembled with Chiwetel Ejiofor, Ewan McGregor, Kelly Reilly, Tom Hiddleston, Michelle Fairley, and more. The play was also directed by the theatre legend, Michael Grandage.

Some early reviews that proved Tom was destined for stardom:

"Ejiofor renders Othello's speeches about being an unruly Moor with vigor and charm, and it is quite clear how he has won his bride. It equally is no surprise that others covet her, including the estimable Cassio, played with tremendous verve by Tom Hiddleston." - The Hollywood Reporter

"The detail of Grandage's production makes it absorbng. Tom Hiddleston's doleful Cassio and Edward Bennett's comic Roderigo light up parts of the play which are often holding operations." The Guardian

"With first-rate support from Tom Hiddleston's Cassio and Michelle Fairley's Emilia, this is a terrific Othello and makes one regret all the more that the stars' commitments preclude a transfer [to Broadway]..." - The Independent

Tom brought along a very special lady, his mum

Tom was also pictured with British MP Diane Abbott who was historically elected as the first Black Woman in the House of Commons.

The entire 12-week run of the show sold out in one day (and this was pre-Hiddlestoners). Critics gave the show and the individual performances rave reviews. Chiwetel went on to win the Olivier Award for Best Actor and Tom was nominated for Best Newcomer (he ended up losing to himself and won for Cymbeline instead).

The show was impactful in other ways too as Ewan would go on to eventually introduce Tom to the Unicef UK team!

Fashion:

I can't see much of Tom's suit to identify it but Tom was wearing a floral Liberty of London tie. The tie made another appearance in 2010 at the Sandown Park Racecourse
